So, here's another super late update from a big event in our family. The big event was our Summer trip to Washington DC. I had never been to our nation's capital, and we were looking for a good vacation for the family that didn't involve a beach (We really wore out the beach vacation over the last decade). So, we went, and really enjoyed ourselves. We were there 7 full days, and used Air BnB for lodging. We saw so much stuff! I think the top three for me were: The White House tour, The US Capital tour, and The National Gallery of Art.
Here's the link to all the pictures.

Here's the scoop. Tristan and three of his good friends really love this video game called Dota 2. There is a world wide Dota 2 tournament held in Seattle every year in August. So, we went to Seattle so the boys could see the tournament, and so Blinda, Brett, and I could see Seattle. Turned out to be a great trip. Here are some pictures from the trip.
His older model truck was victim to serious hail damage, and the interactions with his insurance company that followed are quite interesting.

Here's his first email to our work community asking for advice...

In the recent
hail my truck took on some dings. Nothing major (to me) but enough that the
repair cost exceeded the value of the truck so the insurance company
totaled it (it's a 13 year old truck so doesn't take much to total it). I
didn't know what that meant at the time but they gave me two options:

Sign the
title over to them immediately and they give me the value of the vehicle
minus deductible,

Keep the
truck and they give me the value of the truck minus salvage value and
deductible

I chose option
2 because I figured the truck is still drivable, in good shape, just as good as
it was before the hail except for cosmetic damage, and I could take my
time finding another truck instead of having to do it immediately.

...uh, not so
much.

It wasn't
explained to me by the insurance company but I now know that

a) my
insurance company will no longer insure the truck because they do not insure
salvage-value vehicles,

b) I need to
send my truck title in to the state with a form to get it switched out for
a salvage-title,

c) I need to
have it inspected (and possibly fill out another form) and send that to
the state to show that the truck is drivable

d) and if I
want to drive the truck I need to get it insured by a company that will insure
salvage-value vehicles.

I called the
DMV and they told me I can't drive the truck because it hasn't been deemed
drivable yet and isn't titled correctly. And, of course, it isn't
insured. What a mess.

Has anyone
dealt with this type of situation before? If so, do you have any advice
for navigating through the state process for salvage titles? Can I sell the
truck without first getting the salvage title (in other words, can the new
owner do that)? Can I insure the truck without getting a salvage title? Is the
salvage title only needed if I sell the truck?

Thanks for any
info you can give.

And here's his next email that tells the story of his resolution to the situation...

As a follow
up to my post about hail damage I wanted to provide an update on some things I
learned so everyone can benefit if faced with this situation.

First, the
insurance company (Travelers) was wrong in claiming that the vehicle must get a
salvage title. It took me a while to convince them but they finally came around
after doing some research on their own. In the state of Texas, hail damage does
not constitute requiring a vehicle to get a salvage title if the cost of
repairs is more than the value of the vehicle. This makes perfect sense when
you think of a salvage vehicle as being mechanically unsound and worth more in
parts than as a whole. Obviously hail does not affect the mechanical quality of
a car, only the cosmetic appearance of a car. I spoke to the DMV several times
to validate the information, and the insurance company also validated the
information. So the first part is done. I do not require a salvage title.

Second, the
insurance company dropped me from coverage claiming that they do not cover
salvage title vehicles. I spoke with them about this as well. Since the vehicle
is not a salvage title vehicle they can’t drop my coverage. They said I would
need a written form from a mechanic to state the vehicle was safe to drive. I
balked. I spoke to a supervisor (2 of them actually) and told them the story,
how I was not given all of the information to make an informed decision, etc.
and said if they couldn’t cover the vehicle I would have to find an insurance
company that could, and take my homeowner’s policy and other auto policy with
me. They notified me a few hours later that they do deem the vehicle safe to
drive (go figure) and will cover me for liability, which is all I wanted.

So the end
story is good, the path getting there was painful. I will likely still change
insurance companies after this experience. Bottom line: if you have hail damage
to a vehicle that costs more to repair than the value of the vehicle you do not
need to get a salvage title. And don’t be afraid to fight your insurance
company for what you believe to be fair.

Be safe out
there.

I just wanted to post this as a PSA for anyone out there dealing with a similar situation.

Have a great day.

It's true. He's 18.

He's turned into the finest young man any parent could hope for. The trait that most stands out in my mind is his kindness. He's constantly concerned about the well being of others, and goes out of his way to make sure everyone is as happy as he is. If you've ever been over to our house and had his famous 'Crack Dip', then you know how important it his to him that every one of our guests try this wonderful treat that he loves so much.

We had a great time at the party. I made some Cochinita Pibil, and we ate it up.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04436864168783335046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17547376.post-25412861047170498612013-05-30T14:11:00.003-05:002013-05-30T14:11:39.509-05:00I'm sharing photos through Google+If you didn't know already, when it comes to on line services, I'm a Google customer. I don't really do much with Facebook, Yahoo, etc. etc. All my stuff is done using services provided by Google. I use Gmail for my web based email. I use Blogger (A Google owned product) for this blog. I use Picasa (another Google owned product) for managing photos. I could go on for quite a while listing Google products I use, but it's kind of boring. Let's get to the point.

The point is that since Google+ has become the focus of most of Google's energy as of late, I'm using it too. It has allowed me to share photos in a protected fashion (That means only people that I want to see them get to see them). I could have used other services in the past to accomplish this, but it was too much of a chore to do so. Google+ has made is extremely easy for me to share photos with just my family, or with my family and friends with very little effort.

Therefore, if you are used to seeing a family album with all of my photos on it that are shared with anyone that has a link, those days are coming to an end. From here on, I'll be sharing photos using Google+. If you want to see them, just sign up for a Google account, and you'll be on your way. Just get on there and then search for my name, and you will find me. From that point, I'll help you get your Google+ to a point where you just might like it more than Facebook. The only issue that I see that keeps Google+ less viable than Facebook is the fact that all your friends are on Facebook, and not on Google+. Which is kind of a bummer. :(

Anyway... here's a sample of the pictures I've recently shared on G+

Brett at his "Field Day" event at his school. He had a blast.

Of course, there are a ton more images to see, but you need to get on Google+ to see them. Go for it. It won't hurt at all, I promise.
I used to be pretty active in blogging my family activities before there was Facebook and Google+. I resisted moving to these platforms, but when people like my mom and aunt got a Facebook account, I realized I was being pretty stubborn by having my own blog that duplicated what I could be doing on Facebook.

I never really like using Facebook. Not sure why. I just didn't get into it. Then Google+ came along, and I got into that right away.

Today I learned that Google is adding integration points between Google+ and their old Blogger service. I used to use Blogger several years ago, but it gave way to my own WordPress site sometime during 2006. Then after a few years using WordPress, I just lost interest in keeping up with a blog all together.

Anyway. Long story short. I'm gonna use Blogger again for a while and see if it holds my interest.

We'll see how it goes.

My cousin Kevin and his family came down to visit over Labor Day weekend. Kevin had never been to a Texas Rangers game, much less any major league baseball game, so I asked my boss for the sweet company tickets.

After it was all said and done, we had a pretty awesome day together. We went to see downtown Fort Worth and had lunch at Razoos. Then we went to the Fort Worth Stockyards and saw some really cool stuff. Then it was off to the see the Rangers.
The pictures did not look familiar to me, and that's because they never made it onto the web site. So, being the diligent father that I once hope to be someday... huh???.... I put the pictures in their appropiate spot. I put them in an album called 'January' in the Year 2005 category, since that was when they were taken.
So, I finally found the digital camera and posted some pictures of the boys doing summer stuff.
Brett got into the pool this year with some reservations. After he was in though, it was tough getting him out. Tristan is swimming like a fish of course. He loves for me to throw him as high as I can into the deep part of the pool. If he keeps growing like he is, I won't be able to throw him very high in a couple of years.
It was held at a place called, "Let's Jump" in Watauga. This place is a kid's dream come true... a warehouse full of massive inflatable bounce houses. They had obstacle courses, massive slides, a dodgeball arena, and a king of the hill challenge. We wore ourselves out, and I took a lot of pictures
Jeff Rankin at the Arlington Guitar Show

My neighbor, Jeff Rankin, loves guitars. So, naturally, we came up with an idea to help each other out. He gets computer help from me, and I get guitar lessons from him. This arrangement has worked in my favor by a great deal, because he doesn't have very many computer problems. There is this one issue with network printing, that I haven't been over to set up yet, but that's another story.

This story is about Jeff. Not only is he a guitar enthusiast, he's a walking encyclopedia when it comes to vintage acoustic guitars. Naturally, he thought guitar shows would be a lot more enjoyable if he had his own booth with his own guitars for sell. This is his second show to exhibit at, and by far the biggest. In the first day, he sold 12 guitars. Pretty amazing, since he doesn't even have a store front.

He just knows guitars. He knows what to look for when shopping for guitars. He knows what to avoid. And most of all, he knows a good deal when he sees it. Some may say that his prices are too low, but if you knew the details of the deals, you would say that Jeff is charging a fair price for his products. His customers at the show all felt that they were walking away with a great deal.

Now here's what makes the story special. Jeff had his gallbladder removed just six days prior to the show. His love for guitars, drives him. He told me on the way out to the show, that the greatest thing about doing guitar shows, is that it doesn't feel like work. Here's some pictures from the show.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04436864168783335046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17547376.post-1129051294762724022005-10-11T12:21:00.000-05:002016-03-23T15:47:16.132-05:00Saginaw Western Days Parade
